After being released by the Buccaneers after one season, Chris Baker got a jump on free agency.
He put it to good use.
James’ athleticism means he can line up outside the numbers or over the slot to cover wide receivers. Free and strong safety are options as well.
As newfound sensitivity to sexual misbehavior continues to take down a loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires, each new example of the unprecedented accountability arising in a non-sports context serves as a reminder of what could happen for the NFL and one or more of its teams. When these situations emerge in a sports context, the warning becomes even more clear, either as to things that could happen in the future or as to things that already have.
The latest example comes from the latest expansion of the problems engulfing Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who has seen the issues quickly grow from allegations against the basketball organization he owns to himself.
The Cardinals owe Mathieu $18.75 million in guaranteed money if he’s on the roster the third day of the league year.
General Manager Steve Keim was vague when addressing Mathieu’s future earlier this week.
It’s what we are doing right now with the coaching staff, looking not only at Tyrann but every player, and see how they fit, Keim said. How they fit what we are asking them to do schematically, and how they fit from a salary standpoint, all those things moving forward. And there are a lot of moving parts. What we are potentially doing in free agency, how it affects the cap, and I feel we have a pretty good grasp on that.
Mathieu, 25, led the league in total snaps with 1,053, playing 99.43 percent of the Cardinals’ defensive plays. He made 74 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups last season.
On Tuesday, Mathieu tweeted, It’s a gamble and I’m taking all bets＃. if I lose I vow to make it all back.
Running back Saquon Barkley doesn’t foresee fit being a problem wherever he winds up being drafted in April.
Barkley met the media at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday and said he thinks any team would be a good fit for the player widely considered to be the top back in this year’s draft. Barkley also made it clear that he’s not put off by the prospect of going to a team that’s been stuck in a rut when he was asked about the prospect of being drafted by the Browns.
The last time the Jets made a move like this was in 2009, when then-GM Mike Tannenbaum moved up to No. 5 for Mark Sanchez. That move worked out in the short-term, but not in the long-term.
Maccagnan made the first splash of the draft on Saturday, but his next move will determine whether that splash makes the Jets contenders or they just end up all wet.
The Jets agreed to a two-year deal with inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, a source confirmed. Pierre-Louis, who was with the Chiefs last year, will be a backup linebacker and special teams player.
Copeland is set to be a restricted free agent for the Lions. He’s appeared in all 32 games during his first two years with the Lions, recording 30 tackles, a half sack and a forced fumble.
Copeland went undrafted out of Penn in 2013. He had brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans before being out of the league in 2014. After working out in the league’s veterans’ combine, Copeland was signed by the Lions in April 2015.
It was a tumultuous day in Green Bay, where popular and productive receiver Jordy Nelson, who also happens to be best friend with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, was cut, while tight end Jimmy Graham, whom the Seahawks opted not to retain, will be signed.
The Packers, seemingly messing with the chemistry in their locker room, also reportedly agreed to terms with former Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson, who had tardiness issues with his former team that could not wait to rid itself of him.
If anyone chooses not to participate in any, some, or all of the pre-draft activities and if a given team chooses not to draft pick because of it, that team can then worry about that player ending up playing football with a competitor.
But after trading for defensive end Michael Bennett, he’s now literally a luxury they can’t afford.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles are trying to trade Curry now.
While they were initially considering (or trying to talk him into) restructuring his contract, that’s much less likely now. And teams they’re calling will know that, so any return won’t be a big one. The 29-year-old Curry had three sacks last year, as he played through knee problems.
With more accomplished pass-rushers fetching scant returns, they can’t expect much. Bennett and a seventh-rounder got the Seahawks a fifth-rounder and wide receiver Marcus Johnson. The Dolphins acquired Robert Quinn from the Rams for fourth- and sixth-rounders.
If they can’t find someone to throw them a late pick, it seems reasonable to expect that Curry would be released.
The questions arise regarding Rosen’s non-football traits. Some regard him as arrogant and narcissistic, with a combination of intelligence, confidence, and individualized ambition that could strain relationships in a locker room.
Those opinions may vary from team to team, and talent typically wins out in the end. Plenty of quarterbacks have excessively high opinions of themselves, and many of those high opinions are deserved. Regardless, Rosen will be one of the top quarterbacks drafted and he could end up being the best of them all, especially with the benefit of maturity and growth.
That said, here’s hoping he never matures past his ability to provide very mature-sounding opinions on any topic presented to him. He’s hardly a cliche-machine, and it’s refreshing to hear a guy in a sport that values robotic tendencies show more than a little self awareness. No matter how good he is at the next level, he’ll be good for the game.
The line of marijuana products include salves, vape cartridges, and tonics that will be sold in dispensaries in San Diego, the Orange County area, and Los Angeles with Williams hoping to expand to other states. Related: Ricky Williams hosting ‘cannabis-friendly’ Super Bowl party Williams has been educating himself as a health care practitioner since retiring from football for the last time in 2012 and is very vocal about the benefits of cannabis use among players. However, athletes haven’t been his target market. Surprisingly enough, our research found that the main demographic coming into the (cannabis) market are women ages 35 to 60, Williams told Johnny Diaz of the South Florida Sun Sentinel . Cannabis coming on the scene is a re-emerging of herbalism back into our culture.
So what’s going on here? The potential explanations are these: (1) the NFLN reports are incorrect; (2) Jackson is lying; or (3) the unnamed sources relied on by NFLN are lying.
Whatever the reason(s) for this, it’s a prime example of why Jackson needs to hire an agent. Because this is precisely the kind of thing that a good agent can deal with, calling the NFLN reporters and pressuring them to unring the bell (in lieu of circling the wagons), calling other reporters to get Jackson’s version out there, and otherwise doing whatever has to be done to keep this episode from reflecting negatively on Jackson and, ideally, finding a way to make it reflect on him favorably.
Here’s the real question: Why would Jackson lie about this? He said he hasn’t been asked to work out as a receiver and wouldn’t if he were. If the requests have been made, why not simply say, Some of them asked me to do it, and I told them no.
The Dolphins have given Landry permission to seek a trade after they placed the franchise tag on the receiver. Landry, who would make a projected $16.2 million for 2018 under the franchise tag, reportedly seeks a contract similar to the four-year, $58 million deal that Green Bay’s Davante Adams signed.
Landry, 25, led the league in receptions with a single-season franchise-record 112 last season. He gained 987 yards and a career-best nine touchdowns.
I don’t know why the contracts of David Harris, Jacoby Brissett and Connor McDermott have incurred dead money that counts towards the Patriots salary cap. Harris retired, so doesn’t that mean that any financial obligations are forfeited as a result? Brissett and McDermott were traded and claimed off waivers, respectively, so doesn’t this mean those teams take on all of the players financial obligations and contract guarantees? Are the websites that take dead money into account wrong, or are the rules about dead money different than my interpretation of dead money in these cases?
The Seattle Seahawks made the most significant changes to their coaching staff this offseason since Pete Carroll was hired as the team’s head coach in 2010.
Eight coaches from last year’s staff aren’t returning in 2018, including each of the team’s top four assistants. Six coaches have been added to the group with three coaches moving to new roles as well. Carroll discussed his reasons for the changes for the first time in Indianapolis on Thursday.
I’m really excited about the guys that are here and how it’s working out so far, Carroll said. We are seeing the new energy. I am energized by it. The whole group is. And we are looking forward to working to see how it’s going to turn out.
Carroll also made it clear that he wants Schottenheimer to be heavily involved with the progression of quarterback Russell Wilson.
The quarterback will always be a focal point in your development and really excited about Schottenheimer coming in and Canales taking a hold of that thing and challenging him like maybe he has never been challenged before. That would be great, Carroll said.
I like the fact that he can connect the play caller and the quarterback leader, and the guy that’s going to be with him on the field, as well, on a regular basis. I like the fact that I wanted to make that connection for Russell, so we could communicate directly with him in a little bit different fashion than we have. Dave Canales will work with him, too, of course, but I think Brian brings something that we are looking forward to seeing.
This would make players more conscious of putting the ball on the ground, Polian said.
Wouldn’t that also trade one set of headaches for another?
Perhaps. Those of us who are old enough can remember a few Emanuel-type plays arising every season. It is easy to officiate but sometimes hard to accept as an incompletion.
So where does this all leave us?
The informed guess is that the competition committee will propose a rewriting that eliminates the requirement to go to the ground and redefines what it means to make a football move in order to account for the time element. Ultimately, it will be up to officials to interpret what it means and put it into practice on the field.
In other words, the Calvin Johnson/Dez Bryant debate will end, but new controversies likely will arise.
Beauty will be in the eyes of the beholder with these Class of 2018 quarterbacks. None of them checks all the boxes. Darnold has an elongated throwing motion.
As far as the fumbles go, part of that’s on us as a football team, having to put some young kids in during this season, Helton said. He always tries to have two hands on the ball at all times until he pulls the trigger. We had three injuries by some older kids on the offensive line, had to play some freshmen that were growing up. You still look up and the guy’s 20-4 as a starter and won a Rose Bowl and a Pac-12 title. At the end of the day, no matter what’s going on around you, your job as a quarterback is to win ballgames, and that’s what he does.
And that’s not what the Browns, Giants and Jets did last season. Clay Helton is certain that for someone, it will pay to Suck For Sam.
When the NBA took over the financially troubled New Orleans Hornets in late 2010 and spent more than a year trying to find a suitable, permanent owner, Benson finally stepped in and bought the club, now called the Pelicans, for $338 million. The estimated value of the Pelicans now exceeds $1 billion.
Tom Benson and his first wife, Shirley, had three children, two of whom preceded their father in death. He also had several step children from his marriage to his second wife, Grace, who died in 2003. In addition to his wife, estranged daughter and her two children, Tom Benson is survived by grandchild Dawn Jones, the daughter of Tom Benson’s late son, Robert.
There is no such thing as the brain, Bettman said in December at the owners’ meeting in Orlando, Fla., now a quaint beachside town.
Bettman is still reviled in certain circles, most notably anywhere outside of North America. His former assistant, Bill Daly, has taken up post in the league office of the Russia-based KHL, where he is paid in grants to oil-rich land and who is steadily climbing the ladder of the world’s richest people.
