The 2017 College World Series commences in Omaha Saturday, with eight teams divided into two four-team brackets for a slate of double elimination mini-tournaments transpiring across the following week.
Five of the original eight national seeds are still standing after the regional and super regional rounds, a group that doesn’t include No. 2 North Carolina, which was upended by Davidson in the Chapel Hill regional tilt.
Fiers has bounced back from a 5.21 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP to start the season with a brilliant month of June, leading the team to a 4-1 record over his last five starts, per the OddsShark MLB Database. Fiers has allowed two runs or fewer in all five of those games.
Oakland has won seven of its last 11 games, an impressive feat for a team that was 27-38 before this run. Each of the Athletics’ last three series have ended in sweeps, as Oakland swept the New York Yankees at home, got swept by the Astros in Oakland, and then swept the Chicago White Sox in Chicago this past weekend.
The Athletics have been tormented by the Astros over the last two seasons with a 1-15 record in their last 16 games against Houston.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 8.5 runs. The OVER is 7-3 in the last 10 games between the Athletics and Astros.
With the way that Houston is playing and the recent history between these two teams, this could be a long series for the Athletics. The series continues Wednesday night with a matchup between Jesse Hahn and David Paulino, and wraps up Thursday with Jharel Cotton facing Brad Peacock.
The first round of the 2017 MLB Draft is in the books, which means that we have draft grades for all 30 of the first-round picks. How did your team do? How did your divisional rivals do?
In their last 18 games against the Angels, the Yankees are 13-5, per the OddsShark MLB Database. The Yankees have won each of their last nine home games against the Angels.
Los Angeles has done an admirable job of staying afloat in the absence of superstar slugger Mike Trout. In 20 games since Trout’s injury, the Angels have amassed a respectable 10-10 record, inexplicably averaging almost a run per game more on offense over this stretch than they did with Trout in the lineup.
Eric Young has filled in admirably for the irreplaceable slugger, batting .323 with 14 runs and six stolen bases in 20 games this season. The Angels took two of three from the Yankees at home last week.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 9.5 runs. The UNDER is 10-2-2 in the last 14 games between these two teams.
With home-field advantage and favorable pitching matchups, the Yankees should be heavy favorites in all three games in this series. Ricky Nolasco will clash with Jordan Montgomery on Wednesday, and Jesse Chavez faces Luis Severino on Thursday.
On July 16, 2010, in his ninth game with his new team, the Texas Rangers, Molina hit a single in the second inning. In his next at-bat, he hit a double. In the top of the fifth inning, he hit a grand slam. All he needed was a triple for the cycle.
All I need is physical ability to make the majors.
Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State will play each other in 2018, but the game won’t take place on the traditional gridiron. On Friday, Kennesaw State announced that its game against the Gamecocks next season will be played at SunTrust Park, the new home of the Atlanta Braves that opened in April of this year.
SunTrust Park seats 41,000 people, and it is located in Cobb County, which is northwest of downtown Atlanta, where the Braves’ old stadium, Turner Field, is located.
We couldn’t think of a better way to bring football to SunTrust Park than with Kennesaw State, said Braves president of development Mike Plant via the official release. Vaughn Williams was integral in making this happen, and we’re excited to host this game for Cobb County and Kennesaw State students, faculty and alumni.
The Giants are having a bad season, but at least that means they get to experiment with some of their minor league guys, like power hitter Ryder Jones.
Jays closer Roberto Osuna is dealing with anxiety issues off the field right now, and has shown courage in speaking out about it.
Matt Adams is apparently drawing a lot of interest on the trade market, and this solution to the Braves’ first base logjam seems a lot easier than moving Freddie Freeman to third base.
Kendrys Morales came back to Kansas City for the first time since he signed with the Blue Jays, and so Royals Review decided to look back and Morales’ five best moments wearing Royals blue.
Ready to feel old? Young Dodgers phenom Cody Bellinger went on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt and admitted that he had no idea who Jerry Seinfeld is.
Jacksonville has a heavy military presence, and the city is home to Naval Air Station Mayport and Naval Air Station Jacksonville. In addition, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is located roughly 40 miles north of Jacksonville on the outskirts of St. Marys, Georgia.
Curry, who flew to London on the team’s charter and attended the game at Wembley Stadium, released a statement two days after the Sept. 24 game that called the players’ decision to knee during the anthem “stupid.” Curry said that the players have the right not to stand during the anthem, but he believes they should.
Another key for the Giants has been the willingness of Pugh, their starting left guard in Week 1, to move back and forth between guard and tackle this season.
“He’s a pro. I mean, ‘Whatever you want me to do to win,'” Solari said. “And I’m trying to say not only is Justin, but all the men making moves and making adjustments and trying to get the best vibe on the football fields they’re competing and to get better. The nice thing is, is they’re competing and it’s good. It’s what you want. It’s what makes us better.”
Weekly disclaimer: These aren’t your average power rankings and are instead an attempt to measure the current state of mind — or “hope” — for each team and fan base.
The NFL can be an emotional roller coaster, and one big week can shoot a team’s spirits through the roof and tank another’s hopes of finishing with the Lombardi Trophy in February or beyond. Teams near the top are feeling great after Sunday, while those at the bottom aren’t feeling too optimistic.
Where the Giants’ offensive line can improve is in pass protection. Although Cheap China NFL Jerseys New York only attempted 19 passes last week, quarterback Eli Manning was sacked three times Cheap College Basketball Jerseys despite deploying that quick-release passing game in which he’s not holding onto the ball for long.
It may feel like the season is still early, but a month from now will officially be trade deadline season. As that draws closer, expect VEB to cover all the possible avenues the Cards could go down. The Red Baron tried his hand at putting together a proposal for Donaldson this Sunday. He used the Scott Rolen deal as a comparison, and came to the conclusion that it would take something in the neighborhood of Kolten Wong, Seung Hwan Oh, and Marco Gonzales to acquire the former MVP.
However, like most trade proposals based on looking at prior trades, it’s hard to find a perfect comparison. Rolen was just a rental, whereas Donaldson will have one year remaining at the end of the year, and unless things go disastrously wrong for Donaldson, a team will recoup a draft pick for letting him walk after 2018.
So, in the top of the sixth, and thoroughly bruised after the previous inning’s basura, Hunter Newman stepped to the mound the Tigers’ fifth pitcher on the night and immediately got stabbed with a bases loaded jam. If you’re Oregon State first baseman KJ Harrison, what do you do with a chucked bases situation?
Tuesday night’s total is set at nine runs. The UNDER is 6-1 in the last seven games between these two teams in New York.
All three games in this series will be important with the Yankees currently holding just a two-game lead over Boston for first place. The series continues Wednesday night with a matchup between Rick Porcello and CC Sabathia and wraps up on Thursday with a showdown between David Price and Michael Pineda.
So seeing an umpire in the news for something positive like Tumpane’s heroism on Wednesday, is heartwarming to say the least. He even offered more perspective, per Nesbitt and Chambers:
You never know what somebody’s day looks like, he said. It’s a nice day, everyone’s out for a walk, and somebody’s not having the same day you’re having. I was just glad to help.
Regional host Louisville and opponent Xavier are deadlocked, 0-0, early in their regional elimination game of the NCAA baseball tournament, and the Musketeers will not go quietly into that good night. Xavier starting pitcher Greg Jacknewitz has polished off a clean couple innings of work, and he’s gotten some impressive help from his defense.
Bannon kills a well-hit ball dead, then has a nice rest for his troubles. He and the rest of the Musketeers must win on Sunday to survive for a loser-goes-home game against the Cardinals on Monday, but with athletic defense like this, he’s helping his pals’ tournament chances.
Bannon has two homers in the tournament so far, by the way, so defense isn’t his only expertise.
I’m using this specific article as my only source for making Hall of Fame picks in 10 years. And it looks like the numbers say … hey, wait, come back.
Technically, it’s not a perfect game, just like the last example wasn’t a real no-hitter, but it’s still one of the best individual performances under extraordinary circumstances in baseball history.
Then in rushed Ruth. Chester Thomas tried to prevent him from reaching Owens, who had not removed his mask, but Babe started swinging both hands. The left missed the arbiter, but the right struck him behind the left ear.
Lester is probably fine, though. His fastball is down a tick, but it’s actually up from 2014. His FIP and xFIP are in line with what he’s been doing for years, and the only thing that’s different is that he’s walking more guys than he’s used to.
The only reason he’s up this high is because he’s 33 with a lot of mileage. That doesn’t have to mean he’s in the middle of a gradual decline. But it sure means we have to mention he’s 33 with a lot of mileage.
Robertson has had a rough time in Omaha, failing to hit in clutch situations and committing boneheaded errors like the one above. Still, though, he’s put himself on base when needed, and those behind him in the Tigers’ lineup have batted him home. He in fact snuck under a crazy jumping tag at home in the bracket round against Florida State, a game which LSU eventually won. He’s all over the place in this year’s CWS.
Robertson would eventually redeem himself, however, stabbing a big time catch in the gap to save a single in the fifth.
Dirt in the mouth nothing like it. Guthrie ended the day with one hit, but with fielding prowess like this, who needs a bat?
But enough with highlights. Tiger big bat Greg Deichmann normally a human highlight reel himself came up in the bottom of the sixth hoping to cut into Florida’s 3-1 lead and instead let his cut get away from him, heaving his bat into the first base line’s photographers pool.
This time, it was an 11-4 loss to the Rangers, who have spent more time than they’d like hovering around the .500 mark, too. Toronto has gone 0-9 in these attempts at .500, but it’s not just the fact they’re yet to successfully get there: It’s also how badly they’ve been defeated every time they try. They’ve been outscored 73-24 in these nine contests that’s an average score of 8-3, and that’s if you round up on what the Jays managed to plate.
No, no, no, Syndergaard says, shaking his head. Mmm. That’s tough. I can only bring one thing? How am I supposed to bring my Cholula?
I roll my eyes. This guy and his hot sauce! I tell him that his hot sauce is already there, because in this hypothetical situation, the plane that crashed and deposited him on this island was carrying a full cargo load of Cholula.
The 2017 College World Series is underway, with the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament field whittled down to the final eight schools ready to battle for the title at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
Five of the top eight national seeds advanced to the College World Series, including No. 1 Oregon State, No. 3 Florida, and No. 4 LSU. Only two of these eight teams Florida and No. 6 TCU played in the College World Series in 2016.
The Nationals had an early six-run lead in the first three innings over the Marlins on June 19. The Marlins then equalized at the bottom of the third. In the seventh inning, Giancarlo Stanton tied the game at 7-7, and in the 9th Marcell Ozuna hit a walk-off single.
As the play unfolds, Robertson pump fakes to Deichmann over the top a perfectly viable option, given Deichmann’s speed as a downfield threat but ends up handing off to second baseman Cole Freeman, who runs a counter around the left side for a sizable gain. All told, not bad execution from the diamond Tigers, who should perhaps get in touch with LSU’s football coach, Ed Orgeron.
That’s why the MLB draft is littered with position changes because usually the best athletes rise to the top. It’s why before Amos Otis and Hal McRae were two-thirds of a pennant-winning outfield for the Royals, they were high school shortstops drafted in 1965. It’s why Trevor Hoffman will make the Hall of Fame, even though he was an awful shortstop.
Our job today is to make the best possible team from all the position changes in draft history. And by best, I mean most amusing to me, a horrible person who needs chaos to survive. I’m not trying to make the best team. I’m trying to make the funniest team that would have a chance to score 1,000 runs.
The Mets are open for business and may be sellers soon
If you take a quick glance at the current NL East standings, there aren’t too many surprises. The Washington Nationals are far ahead of everyone else and appear to be cruising to another divisional title. The Marlins and Braves are fighting for mediocrity, and the Phillies are firmly placed in the cellar. That leaves us with the disappointing Mets, who are going into Saturday’s games with a record of 32-41 — that’s good enough for 4th in the NL East and they’re closer to the Phillies than they are the Nationals.
Tournament upstart Davidson advanced its way out of the Chapel Hill regional, upending No. 2 overall seed North Carolina twice for playing rights against Texas A&M in College Station. The Aggies, for their part, eliminated regional host Houston last weekend, and this best-of-three series with the Wildcats will be the most intriguing of the super regional round.
No. 1 overall national seed Oregon State continues to host for the super regional round in Corvallis, and the Beavers would appear to be the prohibitive favorites to win the entire tournament. They’re matched up with Vanderbilt, though, who averaged more than seven runs per game in winning the Clemson regional.
All the games can be streamed via WatchESPN. We’ll update the schedule and scores below throughout the super regional round.
As far as sponsorship deals go, there’s something really pure about a guy who loves hot sauce getting hot sauce to throw him fancy private brunches in fancy private clubs where people pay him to eat his daily Bowl of Doom. I find it admirable that a bajillionaire athlete is still hustling for cheap condiments: He might even get a frozen pizza sponsorship, assuming the DiGiorno people read this article.
If the only downside is that he occasionally has to sit on a bench answering some weird reporter’s inane questions about hot dogs and deserted islands? Well, there are higher prices to pay.
Last week, a new superhero sprinted into the lives of sports fans across the country. His name is The Freeze, and his power? Schooling people in between innings at Atlanta Braves games.
And while that might not sound like a power that needs the word super attached to it, you really have to see The Freeze in action to believe it. In the event, the fan is given a 200-foot head start … and The Freeze still wins. Every time.
I was anxious, both anxious and disappointed, when my name wasn’t called till the third day, you know what I mean, but either way his future is bright, he told media.
Dusty was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 26th round of the 1967 draft and went on to win the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. So don’t count out Darren he’s come a long way since his days of being a too-young batboy.
The three seasons that missed, though, were 2011, 2013, and 2014. You can give them a pass for the first one, considering that Jeter hit .297/.355/.388, which was better than the average shortstop, even if his defense dragged him down. There are no such disclaimers for ’13 and ’14, though. Those were rough, rough seasons.
The other teams with MVP-caliber seasons were the Rangers and Mariners, who combined for five of them. All five were from Alex Rodriguez, who helped both teams inflate their numbers over the last two decades.
He was so, so amazing. If you know him only from centaur jokes and general weirdness, please reevaluate. He was Mike Trout before there was Mike Trout.
